How much space to prepare on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC

If you are checking the GTA 6 file size to decide what to uninstall, the useful reference today is up to 212 GB of free space. That is a substantial commitment for one purchase, but it does not make GTA VI the largest game installation. Simulators, collections of maps and texture packs have already pushed other installations considerably further. A meaningful comparison needs the content, platform and date behind each figure.

On PS5, PlayStation’s support page explicitly asks for 212 GB available before preloading. That is the figure to plan around on PS5, Slim or Pro unless your console presents a different requirement. Sony does not publish three separate sizes for those models on that page. Nor does the requirement establish that the downloaded file will be exactly 212 GB or that every edition will end up occupying the same amount.

For Xbox Series X and Series S, Rockstar provides a shared reference: up to 212 GB depending on the device. The documentation checked does not specify a separate amount for either Xbox. We therefore cannot promise a smaller Series S installation on the basis of its graphics settings or assign it an unpublished figure. Before starting, compare the requirement displayed on your platform with the free space actually available.

On PC, no official GTA VI storage requirement appears in the sources checked. The announced platforms remain PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A list assigning 150, 212 or 300 GB to a computer version is getting ahead of Rockstar’s published requirements. The ranking below does include PC games: it puts storage demands in perspective without announcing a GTA 6 PC release.

Top four: installations that have exceeded 212 GB

These four cases run from largest to smallest. All are on PC, and some include expansions, maps or additional textures. They are installations described by their owners or by a journalist using the game, on the dates shown. We compare them with GTA VI’s announced free-space requirement; this does not establish its final installed size or which base game is larger across every platform.

  1. DCS World — 788 GB with an extensive content collection

On Eagle Dynamics’ official forum, Czar reported a 788 GB root folder on June 27, 2026. Numerous aircraft and terrains were installed, including Iraq, Syria, Sinai, South Atlantic, Nevada and Persian Gulf, alongside free maps. This is an owner’s account, not the size of the basic client. It illustrates how a scenery library can become a computer’s largest storage commitment. For someone regularly flying over only a few maps, keeping the whole collection locally is a convenience choice.

DCS itself lists 250 GB of free space as a minimum and recommends 500 GB on an SSD, plus extra space for paid content. Those official requirements are distinct from the owner’s 788 GB example.

  2. ARK: Survival Evolved — 488 GB with all expansions

Rich reported a 488 GB installation in Steam Community on November 9, 2023, with every expansion and no mods. The game is Survival Evolved, not Survival Ascended. That installation represents approximately 2.3 times GTA VI’s reference. Keeping several survival worlds ready has an obvious storage cost even when you have spent weeks playing somewhere else. Check which maps you actually use before sacrificing a collection of smaller games to make room.

  3. Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) — approximately 387 GB with downloaded content

In May 2024, udidwht described a fresh PC Premium Deluxe installation: an initial 162 GB plus another 225 GB downloaded through Content Manager. Adding those figures gives approximately 387 GB. The owner reported no add-on content in the Community folder on the official forum and specified the edition on Steam. This is the 2020 simulator. The figure counts local content without treating its cloud-hosted world as data occupying the SSD. The useful decision here is which environments to keep available and which to download again when you need them.

  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War — 220 GB in Windows Edition

Writing in Windows Central on September 10, 2026, Richard Devine described a 220 GB Windows Edition installation through PC Game Pass, including high-resolution textures. This is Cold War separate from Warzone, not several Call of Duty games added together inside a launcher. It clears GTA VI’s reference by just eight GB in the published figures. We do not transfer that 220 GB claim to PS5, Steam or Battle.net. Check the selected visual packs as well as the game’s name when reviewing a library.

Why a game’s size is not just one number

A file-size question can mean three different things: data transferred over the internet, space occupied by the installed game, or free space needed to finish an installation or update. A download may be compressed; the resulting files can occupy a different amount; an update may require room while it reorganizes data. That does not justify inventing an extra GTA VI requirement. Follow the amount your platform requests when preparing the download.

Storage size cannot establish quality or play time either. A texture pack can use substantial space without adding a single mission. A simulator with dozens of optional environments has a different content structure from an adventure installed as one package. This ranking shows how large particular libraries have become. It does not prove GTA 6 is better or worse optimized: that would require testing the game and how it runs.

Make room without emptying your entire library

Start with actual free space rather than the capacity printed on the console box. If the menu shows 500 GB available, reserving 212 leaves 288 GB by simple subtraction. If it shows 180, you need at least another 32 to reach that reference. These are planning examples, not the usable capacities of particular models. System storage and existing installations mean a console advertised with 1 TB does not provide that whole terabyte for new downloads.

Next, sort games by size and check which you have not opened recently. Removing one large installation can achieve more than deleting several small ones. Where a game supports separate management of campaigns, maps or textures, inspect those selections before uninstalling everything. Distinguish game installation data from saved progress: check the type of data selected and your platform’s backup or synchronization options.

Digital preloading for GTA VI begins November 10, 2026. Preparing storage avoids discovering a shortage when the download starts. Our calculator uses 212 GB as an adjustable reference: enter your real connection speed and change the size when your platform shows the actual download amount. The result estimates transfer time, not the complete installation process; connection conditions and the service can change the real duration.
